Sandlight pairs a moving sand picture with a soft LED glow. Turn the round frame and the coloured sand trickles through the layers, settling into dunes and valleys that are never quite the same twice. Lit from behind in warm white, the scene becomes a calm, slowly changing piece of art on a desk or shelf.

The lamp measures 25.6 x 28.3 cm (10.1 x 11.1 in) and weighs 1.2 kg (2.6 lb). There are five sand colours, green, black, blue, red and purple, and each comes with a black or white frame, giving ten combinations in all. A black frame frames the sand like a picture, while white feels lighter in a bright room. It suits bedside tables, office desks, living room shelves and studios, and it is a thoughtful gift.

It is made from acrylic and coated iron, with the coloured sand sealed inside. The frame rotates a full 360° by hand, so you decide when the scene changes. Power is by USB or mains, depending on the version supplied. Turn it slowly for the best patterns, wipe the acrylic with a soft, dry cloth rather than a cleaner, and keep it on a flat surface where it will not be knocked.
